Most Christians love to sit down and read the word -- there is nothing like simply soaking your soul in the pages of Scripture. But the time will undoubtedly come, in your spiritual growth and maturity, where you will begin desire to explore the Scriptures in more depth and detail. In order to do this, you will need to rely on a good Bible commentary. Here are some of mine recommendations for the very best Bible commentaries of all time --
A great all-around resource has got to be The Expositors Bible Commentary. This is a complete Bible commentary on the entire Scriptures. They are published as a set of 12 large-size volumes. I love these because they are easy to use, yet have plenty of in-depth information if you want to do language study and theological research. This Bible commentary set has a detailed introduction to each of the books of the Bible and very detailed bibliographies as well -- just in case you want to do further reading. They have a section by section -- and often verse by verse -- expositional summary of each chapter. And if you are not prepared for more technical information, you can bypass these sections because they are kept separate from the main body of the commentary. I believe that the full price for the entire set will be something over $450.
Perhaps you are looking for a Bible commentary -- but not quite so detailed. Okay, I have another recommendation for you: The Believer's Bible Commentary. Published by Thomas Nelson and sons, this is a one volume Bible commentary. It is a great choice for those who are just getting serious about Bible study as it presents the meaning of the Scriptures in understandable and non-technical language. This is an ideal Bible commentary for laypeople -- and it is also very reasonable in price (around $40).
For those of you who love the older Bible teachers, I would certainly recommend Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible. This classic commentary series, written by a Presbyterian pastor and used for over 300 years, can be purchased in a number of formats. The six volume set is available from Hendrickson Publishers for around $130. You can also purchase this Bible commentary in a one volume, unabridged format. Of course, this makes for a very large sized book -- and also smaller print -- but the cost is much less as well: around $40, also from Hendrickson Publishers.
Finally, I would recommend to you the famous "Be" series from the beloved Bible teacher Warren Wiersbe. He has a very interesting -- and understandable -- way of communicating the message of the Bible. These books were first published in paperback form as a supplement to Sunday school literature -- but have taken on a life of their own over the years. You can still purchase them as individual paperbacks for around $11 each. A number of different Bible study software packages also include his writings -- and if you want to have a hardback edition, you can purchase The Bible Exposition Commentary -- this set combines the contents of all the paperbacks into four hardback volumes (four on the Old Testament, two on the New Testament). You will probably pay around $220 for the entire set -- but it is well worth it.
